Unconventional Marketing in an Unconventional Time

Just got done reading this post from David Armano (twitter.com/armano) over at AdvertisingAge and he outlines how big companies can rethink their processes they use to architect their large overly-complicated marketing campaigns. Kind of a nice follow-up form my post below. There’s also a great image as David creates some of the best, simplistic data visualization pieces.

Startup Marketing Tips for My Fellow Entrepreneurs

Well it’s a late Friday night and I slipped into the proverbial zone of sharing. As some people might know, I’m one of ten founding Goorus for the online marketing community, Gooruze.com. It’s co-founded by Clay Cook, Chairman & Co Founder Gooruze, Rachel Cook, Advisor, Co Founder Gooruze and Jackie Shervington, CEO, Co Founder Gooruze. I try to spend time on there each month engaging with student marketers, subject matter experts and fellow marketers. It’s a great place to share your successes and failures in the realm of online marketing. Tonight, I decided to share my own experiences about what has worked for me when it comes to Startup Marketing strategies & tactics.

Entrepreneurship is more than just ideas …

Wikipedia defines Entrepreneurship as:

“the practice of starting new organizations or revitalizing mature organizations, particularly new businesses generally in response to identified opportunities.”

Today we had our first official working session for Yucky Soda, an idea haus, focused on delivering unique consumer products using the collective experiences of the team in design, development and marketing. To fuel this company description we induce our passion into everything. Whether it’s looking at the potential competition, developing target audience profiles, distribution channels, pricing, marketing and even our internal structure; we are here because we love what we do and no one can ever take that from us.

We saw an opportunity to introduce technology into an existing market and using a business model perfected by the team at Threadless, we’re going to enter the market in our typical grassroots fashion and collect market share using a variety of strategies centered our a set of core values we dubbed the “4 C’s.”

If we look at Wikipedia, there is a section called Advantages of Entrepreneurship. I wanted to note some key things that led us to where we are today:

  1. Development of new markets - We see an opportunity and know we can execute on it. We’ll be doing business in a different way than what is currently in our market.
  2. Employment for others, often in better jobs - Our culture and environment is built upon the 4 C’s, so you can guarantee that people are going to have fun everyday and love what they do.
  3. The ability to have great accomplishments - Adam and I just want to fulfill out own entrepreneurial spirits and also give people the opportunity to be a part of a company that places emphasis on customers and its community, both internal and external.

The old process of R&D, manufacturing, sourcing and large advertising budgets are going to be challenged and we are proud to introduce a new model that inspires people to create unique products, while motivating them to market and sell their own products. Well, that’s enough for now. Look forward to keeping this updated with our adventures from the very beginning stages of starting a new business venture, securing funding and being mavericks in a space that craves it.
